AMERICA’S TARIFFS, SANCTIONS, AND THE BULLY PROBLEM
The United States was founded on the principle of resisting taxation imposed by the British, particularly taxes levied to cover the costs of defending American territories during the French and Indian War.
Not only that, the lack of representation in the British Parliament led American colonists to kick off the Boston Tea Party as an act of protest. Yet today, when a government seemingly out of step with its people makes hefty choices about wars and conflicts, barely a whisper of protest comes from the public.
The current administration quietly drives up your costs with sanctions, endless wars, and those senseless tariffs…
…and guess who ends up footing most of the bill? You do.
Which, whether you admit it or not, is just another form of TAXATION.
And. Yet. No Boston Tea Party.
Let’s put this another way… every school has one.
That kid who towers over the rest, deciding that the playground only runs smoothly if everyone pays him a little something to stay out of trouble. Lunch money, your seat at the good table, your snacks, whatever he fancies that week…
You pay up because it keeps you safe.
And for a while, it works, because he’s the largest kid there, and nobody’s individually big enough to say no.
That’s basically the last eighteen months of American trade policy.
THE TARIFFS ARE A SHAKEDOWN WITH A SPREADSHEET
In April 2025, Trump announced what the administration called Liberation Day.
A blanket base ten percent tariff on nearly every country on Earth, with some countries pushed as high as forty-six percent depending on how large their trade surplus with America happened to be.
Not because those countries had done anything to America, but because the math of the relationship didn’t flatter America enough, and the one thing this Administration stands for is vanity.
Canada got hit with thirty-five percent. The EU, twenty-five.
Small, poor economies like Lesotho and Cambodia, countries that could never plausibly threaten the U.S. economy, got some of the highest rates on the list, simply because they sell to America more than they buy from it.
In February 2026, the Supreme Court actually struck this all down, ruling the emergency powers law Trump used didn’t authorise the use of tariffs at all. But, just as the world exhaled a sigh of relief, and within the same day, the administration replaced it with a new ten percent tariff under a different law.
Steel and aluminium tariffs went to fifty percent.
The madness of it all.
Recently, Canada got hit with another fifty percent on top of that, over dairy and cars and so on…
It’s become so tangled that just figuring out who owes what at the border probably costs a fortune in itself. Mountains of paperwork pile up, despite all those promises to slash red tape in Trump’s first term.
Now, every country finds itself stumbling through America’s ever-changing rules.
This isn’t a policy.
It feels less like policy and more like a protection racket.
The wildest part?
It’s American consumers who shoulder most of these tariffs, by a long shot…
So prices climb higher and higher… all because you’re being taxed, plain and simple…
…and yet, NO BOSTON TEA PARTY.
SANCTIONS ARE THE QUIET VERSION OF THE SAME MOVE
Tariffs are the noisy version of stealth taxation.
Sanctions, on the other hand, are the silent version, the kind of stealth tax so tangled that most people can’t even trace it back to their own wallets.
Russia’s, Iran, Venezuela… Cuba… China…
You can’t buy a great-value electric car in America, or get your hands on the latest DJI camera.
Why, sanctions…
Venezuela’s oil sector has been squeezed on and off for decades, and yet, the people with putty brains will scream it’s a failing state because of Communism… Socialism… or whatever…
Words most people in America can not define but can rage against.
Iran is under what Washington itself was calling maximum pressure… from sanctions. Then what, a WAR that more than 80% of the population don’t want and definitely don’t want to pay for, but your government said it was necessary.
And, once again, the bill lands squarely in your lap, the taxpayer. You pay it upfront, and you pay it again through hidden taxes – hello, inflation.
Most Americans never connect the dots, either because they were never taught how…
or because the media drains away any intellectual space for real thinking.
IT IS THE SAME DUMB LOGIC EVERY TIME
You don’t get to trade, bank, or exist economically on your own terms — you get to do it on America’s, or you don’t get to do it at all.
And to be clear here, some of these countries targeted for sanctions are genuinely awful regimes, and I am not positive on them one bit.
But the sanction tool doesn’t stop at them.
It’s been used on allies, on tiny economies, on countries that had the wrong trade balance in a spreadsheet doing the rounds in the Oval Office. And all the while, it’s making life more expensive for Americans and quietly nibbling away at the dollar’s worth…
…and yet, HELLO – NO BOSTON TEA PARTY?
We are left hanging on that one question. What happens to the bully?
Here’s the thing about the big kid in the playground that every school eventually finds out.
He doesn’t get taken down in one dramatic moment… that only happens in Hollywood… No local hero musters the courage to punch back.
What actually happens is smaller, more corrosive and slower than that.
The other kids stop needing him. They start trading lunches with each other instead. They gather in their own corner of the playground, and one day, someone glances over to see the big kid standing alone, orange hand outstretched, with no one lining up anymore.
That’s the more peaceful story running underneath the tariff headlines.
South Korea, Japan and China — three countries with plenty of reasons to distrust each other — are talking about a regional trade framework that doesn’t route through Washington.
The EU and Canada, both freshly tariffed, have been deepening trade ties with each other instead of the U.S.
Russia, Iran and plenty of sanctioned oil exporters have built shadow fleets and alternative payment networks specifically engineered to bypass the need for the dollar and banking complications.
And that’s slowly edging out the infamous PETRO DOLLAR, the very foundation of America’s debt bubble…
The lack of understanding of the mechanics for fighting back is as staggering as the debt figure.
And none of that reverses American power overnight.
But every one of those workarounds is a small, permanent piece of leverage that doesn’t come back once it’s up and running.
THE NEW BOSTON TEA PARTY
I don’t know when, or even if, this particular bully gets his comeuppance in a way anyone can point to a date on a calendar.
Empires that act this way rarely fall in one blow; instead, they slowly notice the room growing emptier… trade routes bustling elsewhere, their currency just a bit less vital than before.
Maybe that’s already happening, and we just won’t be able to call it until it’s run its course.
Or maybe the U.S. is too big for the usual ‘global playground rules’ to apply to it at all.
Who the hell knows…
I once believed America’s fate would drift across the Atlantic and wash up in the UK, but when it comes to crumbling empires… I’m starting to think the story of the fallen British Empire is flowing the other way now.
And its roots are taking a sobering hold in Washington DC.
I do think people in America see it, feel it, and when they go online and compare what they have to somewhere like…
…dare I say it, China, and see people living happy, safe, inexpensive and exciting lives.
I think they are starting to ask questions… and maybe they will kick off…
Like they did for the BOSTON TEA PARTY.
Maybe?
Look, I’ve read enough and watched enough of this pattern play out in real life geopolitics to think that’s rarely how it actually ends.
No big blow in the face. No back elbow in a struggle.
It is often that slow burn.
Where, sooner or later, the other kids in the playground figure out that they didn’t need the bully boy as much as he needed them.
Maybe it’s just a matter of time.
Time, they probably don’t have.
